Retiana Tiyamike Phiri is a Biomedical Engineering Technologist who found her love for innovation early in high school. With a passion for cyber security and medical device innovation, she embarked on a mission to use her expertise in both fields to bring an Impact in the African medical device industry. . She is also keen on keeping abreast of the latest technological advancements.
Retiana holds a Diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology, with a specialization in medical device development and cybersecurity. Throughout her academic journey, she has excelled in her studies, earning recognition for her innovative projects and research. Her academic pursuits have equipped her with the skills and knowledge to tackle complex healthcare technology challenges with great precision. Notably, Retiana was one of the youngest recipients of the National Innovation Initiative award in 2021 at only 18 years of age. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Technology Business Centre (NTBC) bestowed her with the award for her innovative device that can relieve chronic and reproductive pain. Even in high school, Retiana demonstrated a keen interest in problem-solving and served as the president of the Junior Engineers Technicians and Scientists (JETS) club. Her spirit for innovation persisted in college when she served as the Women in Engineering Student Representative at Evelyn Hone College. During her tenure, she advocated for more female participation in engineering innovations.
Upon completing her diploma in biomedical engineering, Retiana committed to making a tangible impact in healthcare. She transitioned into the realm of innovation and is currently collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to develop cutting-edge solutions that address pressing healthcare challenges. Her drive for innovation fuels her commitment to improving patient care and outcomes.
